Big is a relative term. It can be used as a measure of size as well as an assessment of impact. Used as a descriptor for Oceanco's recent Project Shark SY 717 superyacht launch, both definitions apply.
The 90-meter yacht was launched from the yard off the coast of the Netherlands on Feb. 21, successfully completing sea trials at the end of April. Notable not only for the length of the yacht placing Shark in the top 100 largest superyachts on the water today, but for Luiz DeBasto's extensive sweeps of glazing forming the superstructure, she is remarkable in terms of both extraordinary size and innovative style.
DeBasto, based in Miami, dubbed the project with its moniker after seeing an overhead view of the wing stations flanking the pilothouse which echoed the outline of a hammerhead shark. His first collaboration with Oceanco, DeBasto created the exterior styling for the yacht, inspired by shapes from nature and organic images. Complementing DeBasto's flowing exterior lines, Nuvolari Lenard Interiors ensure the impact of the cabins and social spaces will be just as impressive.
Dramatic features throughout the four-deck displacement yacht mark her as a unique standout in design. The upper deck is dedicated to an owner's suite with private terrace and spa pool overlooking the bow. Side terraces, a rear patio with roof, alfresco dining, and service areas allow discreet attendance via a separate crew elevator. A second elevator for guests is wrapped in a spiral staircase.
The helipad, accessed via an enclosed stair aft, ensures guests will not experience downflow from helicopter blades or exhaust from the aircraft's engines, adding a measure of to privacy of arrivals and departures. The bridge deck swimming pool fed by a waterfall from the deck above, sports a bevy of sunpads. An expansive beach club is stocked with features, including a dive center, hammam, sauna, and the perfect parking spot for an on-board submarine, something that has become a must-have for the ultimate superyacht guest experience.
The yacht sleeps 12 guests in 6 spacious staterooms, with crew quarters accommodating more than 30 to ensure an excellent level of service while on board. Powered by two 4828hp MTU 20V4000 M73L engines, her top speed in sea trials was 20 knots. Constructed with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure
Views from the main deck salon through 2.3-meter windows are incomparable across the 14-meter beam. With delivery scheduled soon, it is expected Project Shark will be enjoyed by her owners in time for the 2018 Mediterranean season.
