The great yacht designer Germán Frers once told me, “a boat has to be pretty if you want it to sail fast.” I took his words to heart and over the years have become a firm believer. Pretty boats do sail fast and Barong D, a Frers design built by Wally Yachts, is a true testament to this notion. Barong D is not just a pretty yacht; it’s an exceptionally beautiful yacht, striking and dynamic with more than a hint of elegance. From the majestic blue hull to the blond teak deck the yacht is a head turner, and that’s before we take a closer look at some of her secrets.
Barong D is the third Wally delivered to a faithful repeat client, a truly passionate and experienced yachtsman who replaced his Wally 94 Barong C, which in turn in 2005 substituted his first Wally, the 80-footer Barong B built in 2000. This almost two-decade-long collaboration between the owner, Frers Naval Architecture and Luca Bassani of Wally Yachts has produced some extraordinary yachts, each building on the lessons learned culminating in the most recent design, Barong D.
Barong D has a wide hull which uniquely camouflages her classic lines that reflect the yachts cruising attitude. But it was in the minute attention to detail with the engineering that allowed this class cruiser to perform on the race course. “Wally employed all its advanced know-how to produce a fully equipped cruising Superyacht that displaces only 65 tons; two tons lighter than predicted,” said Luca Bassani, the founder of Wally Yachts. “And furthermore she is approximately 35% lighter than the other yachts in this size range. We succeeded in delivering a truly exceptional performance cruiser that accommodates in full comfort the owners who spend several months of the year onboard. Every component of Barong D has been meticulously developed to produce a state-of-the-art Superyacht reflecting the Wally DNA to improve the on-the-water enjoyment while at the same time increasing safety.”
Full 3D engineering was used to optimize both the design and construction of the hull and deck, and construction was carried out using the latest pre-preg carbon technology throughout the yacht. Advanced technologies and materials were also used for the electrical system resulting in lightweight switchboards and cables and a specific yacht monitor and control system. Advanced technologies were also used for the hydraulic system which provides the 350 bar max pressure and the electro-valves controlled by dedicated software to optimize the speed of maneuvers.
