Southern Wind is thrilled to announce the launch of SW96#04 NyumbaGT, the first sailboat with hybrid propulsion in the Southern Wind family. Designed for a passionate sailor and owner of four sailing yachts, NyumbaGT was conceived to meet his desire for a high-performance yet innovative yacht that could support shorthanded sailing around the world in full compliance with IMO Tier 3 regulations. Our “Smart Custom” philosophy allowed the owner to benefit from our combined design and yard experience, ultimately creating a 96-foot sailing boat equipped with an advanced hybrid motorization system. We are proud to welcome SW96#04 NyumbaGT into our fleet!
Southern Wind and BAE Systems partnered to introduce the SW96#04 NyumbaGT power and propulsion system. According to Marco Alberti, Southern Wind CEO, HybriGen® propulsion system was the main element that attracted the owner’s attention. This boat will be the world’s first of its size range with a hybrid-gen system, allowing for greater sustainability in superyacht construction. Mr. Alberti expressed his pride in bringing this revolutionary concept to fruition, allowing their client to take on a leading role within this sustainable change.
The BAE HybriGen® propulsion system and Hundested controllable Pitch Propeller have the power and hydrogeneration capability to meet modern standards. Its advanced 650 Volt energy storage system and its electrical efficiency allow for zero-emission propulsion, a wide steaming range, and long quiet periods in hotel mode. The system is designed with full redundancy of key elements along with their quality to ensure excellent reliability. Southern Wind has adapted the technology from its use on land and optimised for marine use. As Andrea Micheli, Chief Commercial Officer at Southern Wind adds:

The NyumbaGT is a luxurious and high-performance yacht, crafted with care by Farr Yacht Design. It features a full carbon hull, deck, bulkheads, and a lifting keel between 3.4m and 5.5m. Its performance capabilities include twin rudders, carbon rigging, and a fixed bowsprit. Boasting titanium fittings that support weight savings and easier maintenance operations, the yacht also features an aft garage large enough to fit a 4.5m tender and an extra large swimming platform that offers 8.5sq meters of private beach-club entertainment directly on the water’s surface!
The SW96#04 is designed to impress with its GT deck configuration. This layout was specially crafted based on the client’s needs and requests. Massimo Gino from Nauta Design, who worked on the exterior and interior of this yacht, said this: “Nyumba’s deck design is an upgrade of what we’ve done for award-winning SW105 GT Taniwha with improvements that specifically suit this owner’s needs. For example, all deck hardware are aligned neatly to make room for circulation paths and other amenities. The mainsheet traveler track has been repositioned farther back to reduce drag while steering stations have been moved closer in line and towards the sides of the boat – adding visibility while sailing as well.”
Nyumba, designed and built by Southern Wind Shipyard, beat out her competitors with an innovative interiors layout comprising of an owner’s cabin, two guest cabins, crew quarters and galley. The boat has been customized to meet the clients’ live-aboard needs, providing a home-like atmosphere. Marco Alberti from SWS proudly states: “We succeeded in creating a unique feeling of home away from home for our client, thanks to his wife’s signature touch when it came to design and décor.”
