Fancy A Sail? Nautor Swan 108 Is Ready to Race or Roam

Emerging from its extraordinary sailing lineage, the Nautor’s Swan 108, Fancy, fits stylishly between Swan’s 98 and 120, subtly claiming its éclat as a racer, a cruiser, and an innovator. Commissioned by a pair of experienced master mariners, Fancy is the first of the Swan 108. The benefactor of her designers and builders owning decades upon decades of experience in performance-oriented sailing yachts, Fancy remains nonesuch among those who respect, value, and embrace life at sea.

Forty Years of Collaboration Between Swan and Frers

The legendary Germán Frers crafted the naval architecture for the 108, embellishing an already sterling reputation for working with Nautor that began in 1980. Contributing his expertise to Swan; Frers and Nautor have since partnered to craft many important models, including the 45, the 77, the 120, and now, the 108.

“We always start a project with a clean slate as a way to investigate and double check the choices available and to match the briefs from the sales force closely,” Germán noted, adding, “There is no specific change you need to make once you go over 100’ but just continue observing the mathematics and laws of physics.”

Frers explained more specifically that changes in length are linear, areas are squared, volumes are cubed, and stability remains variable to the 4th exponent. Frers employed CFD analysis, comparing a clutch of design options to ensure comfortable journeys through challenging weather while maintaining acceptable speed.

Frers cited factors contributing to his successful partnership with Nautor, embracing commitment to performance and quality, paying attention to the details. Frers also emphasized the importance of close collaboration with Nautor, as a high degree of precision is essential to complete such complex designs. Lastly, Frers acknowledged shared values regarding commitment to excellence, earning Swans a high regard and great respect for their endurance, safety, and innovation.

Balance, Aerodynamics, and Proportions Studied By Micheletti

Lucio Micheletti and Micheletti + Partners collaborated with Nautor Swan and Frers to craft exterior styling with natural elegance and sophistication, while delivering creative solutions that proved aesthetically beautiful and truly functional. The 108 was his first collaboration with Swan, bringing a number of innovative concepts to the table.

Micheletti describes the intention, noting, “We revisited the shapes and technical surfaces of the coachroof, modeling the lines to reach a point of maximum balance by playing with aerodynamics and proportions. We wanted a shape smoothed by the wind where the essential and dynamic lines were enhanced.” Invested in creating a new luxury, Micheletti was determined to arrive at a modern interpretation of timeless classical yacht design.

Misa Poggi Delivered Bright Social Spaces

The impeccable design style of Misa Poggi worked with the Nautor interior team to ensure a high level of livability and comfort on board the Swan 108, keeping three essential factors in mind. Designing with air, light, and space, Poggi considers these elements central to every choice when designing for Swan, noting, “Everything should give the idea of being immersed in a bright space in perfect harmony with the outside.”

On a boat, Poggi explains, interior space is restricted. Guests come into contact with surfaces on board, whether with bare feet, brushing up against walls, or comfortably lounging on sofas. Those textures must be pleasing. Internal balance, meaning the volume, the boards, the materials, the geometries, all have to work together in a way that pampers guests with a comfortable, safe, pleasant experience.

Poggi says she selects materials and colors selected for their tactile and visual sensation, imparting specific moods for specific areas. “I choose light colors to give an idea of breadth and dark colors for a more intimate atmosphere.”
