Heesen’s Project Orion: Redefining the Future of Luxury Yachting for Spring 2025

Dutch yacht builder Heesen has unveiled its latest masterpiece: Project Orion, a 50-meter all-aluminum hybrid superyacht set to redefine efficiency, elegance, and performance on the high seas. Launched at Heesen’s Oss shipyard on December 6th, the vessel, code-named YN 20750, is expected to be ready for delivery in Spring 2025. Designed to impress aesthetically and technically, Project Orion is a beacon of advanced craftsmanship, showcasing Dutch expertise and innovation.

A Cutting-Edge Vessel in the 50-Metre FDHF Series

Project Orion exemplifies precision engineering as part of Heesen’s acclaimed 50-meter Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) series. This all-aluminum yacht offers a gross tonnage under 500 GT, combining reduced weight with exceptional structural integrity. The FDHF, developed by naval architect Van Oossanen, is pivotal to its efficiency.

The design optimizes propulsion across various speeds, ensuring superior performance. Twin MTU 12V 2000 M61 engines power Project Orion, delivering 600kW each and enabling a top speed of 16.3 knots. At a cruising speed of 12 knots, the yacht consumes an impressively low 98 liters of fuel per hour, excluding hotel load. In hybrid mode, consumption drops to just 45 liters per hour at 10 knots, demonstrating the vessel's exceptional fuel efficiency and sustainability.

Hybrid Propulsion for Sustainable Luxury

The hybrid propulsion system places Project Orion at the forefront of sustainable yachting. By combining traditional engine power with electric propulsion, the yacht reduces fuel consumption and minimizes its environmental footprint without sacrificing performance. This innovation aligns with the growing demand for eco-conscious luxury and offers owners a forward-thinking approach to yacht ownership.

Exterior Excellence by Omega Architects

Frank Laupman of Omega Architects designed Project Orion’s striking exterior, blending elegance with functionality. The near-vertical bow enhances the yacht’s modern profile and improves its ability to navigate through waves with minimal resistance. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide expansive views, while open bulwarks emphasize a seamless connection to the ocean.

This bold yet practical design underscores the balance of form and function, delivering a visually arresting yacht that is highly seaworthy.

Sophisticated Interiors by Cristiano Gatto

Italian designer Cristiano Gatto brings an unmatched level of sophistication to Project Orion’s interior. The design maximizes natural light and provides unobstructed ocean views, creating an inviting and tranquil atmosphere.

Accommodating up to 12 guests, the layout includes six luxurious staterooms. The main deck houses a master suite designed as a serene retreat with panoramic views. A full-beam VIP cabin on the lower deck offers a similarly indulgent experience, complemented by four additional guest staterooms. Each space is thoughtfully arranged to ensure comfort, privacy, and flexibility, making Project Orion suitable for private and charter use.

Exceptional Performance and Craftsmanship

Ruud van der Stroom, Heesen’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted Project Orion’s extraordinary qualities:
Project Orion presents a rare opportunity for discerning clients to acquire a superyacht that embodies Dutch craftsmanship's unrivaled safety and solidity. By summer, Project Orion will be poised to navigate the oceans, setting a new standard for luxury.

The yacht’s lightweight aluminum construction and compact machinery package enhance its performance, allowing clients to cruise efficiently and sustainably. Meanwhile, meticulous attention to detail ensures that every element—from the engineering to the interior finishes—meets Heesen’s uncompromising standards.

Sea Trials and Final Preparations

As Project Orion moves into the final stages of production, the focus shifts to system commissioning and extensive testing. Heesen’s rigorous sea trials, scheduled to take place in the North Sea by mid-February, will validate the yacht’s performance, safety, and durability. These trials are a hallmark of Heesen’s commitment to delivering a vessel of unparalleled quality and reliability.

A New Benchmark in Luxury Yachting

Set for delivery in Spring 2025, Project Orion is poised to set a new benchmark in the 50-meter luxury yacht category. Combining cutting-edge technology, sustainable propulsion, and sophisticated design, this yacht embodies the future of yachting. With its Dutch pedigree and innovative features, Project Orion offers owners an extraordinary vessel for global cruising, whether exploring remote destinations or hosting elegant gatherings at sea.

For those seeking a vessel that harmonizes performance, style, and sustainability, Project Orion represents an opportunity to invest in a truly exceptional yacht. As the newest addition to Heesen’s distinguished fleet, it is a testament to the shipbuilder’s enduring legacy of innovation and excellence
