The year 2013 is an important time for the Volvo Ocean Race, as they celebrate their 40th birthday. They decided to commemorate this event in an original and spectacular way: a photo exhibition with forty stunning images that convey the race's complete story.
Volvo Ocean Race began as the Whitbread Round the World Race on September 8th in 1973 and remains being sport's greatest test of teamwork, skill and determination. The exhibition named "40 Years, 40 Faces", started on June 14 and will remain open until February 28, 2014. ¿Where can you enjoy this admirable exhibition? The pictures show many changes in the forty years of the race. From the clothes the participants wear to the innovative yachts that compete. But the images also transmit that the essence of the race has not changed at all. Emotion, effort and exhaustion are always present.
"The Volvo Ocean Race has always been about courage, commitment and the trust our sailors put in each other as they race around the world. The images here are testament to that", said Race CEO Knut Frostad. The idea of the exhibition is far from being a chronological history of the race.
Images used at the exhibition have come from many diverse sources: Onboard Reporters, former competitors, race photographers and one amazing image was chosen via a Facebook campaign.
This Facebook campaign was named "40 Years, 40 Facebook" and was a search where fans had to send any photos they had concentrating on faces connected with the race, on people rather than boats. A picture taken by Anders Odelberg, a former competitor, was the chosen one. His "Iceman" photo fits perfectly with the theme of the exhibition: "While superficially so much has changed over the forty years, the essence of the race remains exactly the same".
