Amidst the many treasures of Provence, the scenery, culture, heritage, arts, gastronomy lies an exquisite gem known as La Bastide de Moustiers. Only two and half hours’ drive from Port Hercule via Cannes or more quickly via helicopter to the landing pad out front, La Bastide rests at the edge of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. Painstakingly crafted with refined taste and minute attention to detail, this auberge gastronome beckons those seeking a respite from the bustling world, offering a haven to indulge all their senses. With a Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse restaurant amid the enchanting beauty of the surrounding region, La Bastide de Moustiers is a destination that epitomizes refined grace and timeless elegance.
Visual Feast
This former 18th-century farmhouse, originally selected by the renowned chef to become a Ducasse family retreat, rests within ten acres of gardens, dotted by plots of organic vegetables and herbs used by the Michelin-starred kitchen. Mature olive trees provide some height to this landscape and the ever-nodding panicles of masses of lavender scent the breeze. Set against the dramatic granite ramparts of Verdon Gorge, dubbed Europe’s Grand Canyon, this is a place that provides the ultimate inspiration for daydreams.
The property’s weathered stone façade exudes an aura of grace and authenticity. The warm hues of the sun-drenched walls blend with the vibrant colors of the Provençal landscape, where the deep purple of lavender is punctuated by the yellow fields of sunflowers. The hotel’s interiors continue to captivate with their tasteful design and attention to detail. The ambiance exudes a sense of luxury, inviting guests to unwind in a haven of comfort and tranquility. Each of the eleven rooms and two suites boasts its own unique personality, adorned with antique furnishings, delicate fabrics, and local artwork. Each is named for something. From the plush bedding to the carefully curated amenities, no detail is overlooked in ensuring a memorable stay.
A heated outdoor pool and tables on terraces make the most of the sunny warmth of summer days in these glorious surroundings. La Bastide is also family-friendly, and the younger set -- and even some of their accompanying adults -- will enjoy some time with the donkeys and assorted barnyard residents.
Tasteful Indulgence
With a menu overseen by the legendary chef in typical Ducasse fashion, the dishes here draw inspiration from the region’s bountiful produce and flavors, showcasing the essence of Provençal cuisine, elevated to new heights. Simplicity meets sophistication in every impeccably plated course and is enhanced by the youthful yet utterly professional and enthusiastic staff who do their best to ensure diners are put at their ease with nothing else to do but to enjoy. Under attentive Chef Adrien de Crignis, the 3- and 4- course menus focus on fresh as well as local, with vegetables elevated from their typical supporting roles. Diners will appreciate that gluten and other common allergies can be catered for and vegetarians are also easily accommodated. The menu changes frequently of course, but aged beef, lamb, and swordfish make frequent appearances as entrées. Starters feature just-picked artichokes and tomatoes, enhanced with flowers and herbs from the garden and while vanilla and chocolate have their rightful place on the dessert menu, the fresh seasonal apricots and peaches are the ideal choice, along with the local cheese plate. Before the walnut fireplace or on the picturesque terrace, featuring the panoramic views beyond, no matter where you dine, these are havens where memories are quickly made. The restaurant itself also features a room for private groups as well as a salon with a single table for couples, making it perfect for celebrating a special occasion.
